| Tacitus Burgin Biography written by Parker LaBach Tacitus Burgin, the son of John and Mary (Howard) Burgin was born on the family farm in Madison County near Otter Creek, near Richmond, Kentucky on February 7, 1829. He married Mary Helen Hinds, daughter of Samuel and Eleanor (Dinwiddie) Hinds, on September 17, 1851, at Camargo near Mt. Sterling in Montgomery County, Kentucky (Note: Mary Helen Hinds' parents died when she was very young and she lived with her mother's sister's family, the Kirkpatricks) Tacitus and Mary Burgin lived on a farm on Otter Creek near "station of Shearer" for a few years. Three of their seven children Perry, Bettie and John were born there. Tacitus' father, John Burgin, died in 1856. On May 9, 1856 Calvin Burgin and Rowan hi wife, Tacitus Burgin and Mary his wife, Thos. G. Parish and Louisa his wife sold their rights in the land of John Burgin to Clifton and Esom Burgin. All parties were heirs of John Burgin. The deed is registered in Madison Co. Crt., Deed Bk 9, pg. 499. There is a detailed description of the land in the deed. Sometime after that and before the birth of their next child in 1859 they moved to Fayette County one mile east of Athens. Their house still stands although in somewhat dilapidated condition since it has not been lived in for many years. Tacitus described himself as being a farmer, a democrat politically, and a member of the Christian Church in Athens. Tacitus Burgin died at the age of 86 at the home of his son, Dr. Perry Burgin, at McIntosh, Florida, March 9, 1915. Both Tacitus and Mary Burgin are buried in the Lexington Cemetery, as is Mary's brother Tilford Dinwiddie Hinds (Uncle Tip). Tacitus Burgin is listed in the 1860 Census for Madison County, Kentucky in the household of Benjamin Howard, as a farmer, age 31, born in Madison County, KY, with personal property of $13,000. Also listed were Mary Burgin, 30, born in Montgomery Co., KY; Perry, 7; Bettie, 5; John, 3; and Clifton, 1. The latter 4 children were born in Madison Co., KY. Tacitus was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Fayette County, KY. Tacitus Burgin is listed in the 1870 Census for Fayette County, Kentucky as a farmer, age 37, born in Kentucky with real estate worth $16,560 and personal property worth $1,850. Also listed are Mary, 55; Perry, 18, farm hand; Bettie, 16; John, 14; Clifton, 11; Frank, 7; and Helen, 2. All were born in Kentucky. |
